This must have been the best attended walk of the year as a large crowd of Polyramblers met at Putney Bridge tube station for our pre-Christmas lunch walk.  We followed the Thames Path through Bishops’ Park, leaving the river briefly to walk around Fulham football ground.  We continued to Hammersmith Bridge and the Rutland Arms, a nice Taylor Walker pub by the river.    Continue reading Sunday 11th December. Once again the GSO gave us an inspirational demonstration of musicality, vitality and expertise, from the haunting violin solo of Scheherezade to the stirring ensemble performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Even though they are well known works, the Orchestra and especially the solo violinist, Amarins Wierdsma, under the baton of the Venezuelan conductor Diego Matheuz, put their hearts and souls into their playing, imbued with youthful energy and enthusiasm, leaving the audience stimulated and refreshed, to face the outside world and all it has to throw at us! A Social event organised by Christine, the Club’s President.  Christine was waiting for the Polyramblers at Maidenhead station and she took them for a walk through “The Gullet”, a local nature reserve, to her house for tea/coffee and biscuit on the patio.  Later, the group walked to town for a pub lunch and then to the Maidenhead Heritage Centre (which used to be a pub).   It has permanent exhibitions about the history of Maidenhead and the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) and a spitfire simulator.  Continue reading Saturday 11th June. The AGM, which took place at the University of Westminster, was attended by 38 members, four more than last year.  This time, we were in a large room with nice blue chairs with wheels and we had plenty of space to accommodate everybody.    The AGM was attended by our long-lost mascot, Quintin, who had spent a few years in the attic of Gerald’s brother (for the record, Quintin was supposed to go home  with Danny after the meeting but Siew Tin offered to look after our mascot).  The formal business of the meeting included the minutes of last year’s AGM, the report of the Committee on the activities of the club and the financial report and statement of accounts.  The Rambler of the Year Award was presented by the President to Geoffrey who had done a record 63 walks in 2015.  It was the 14th time he won the award!
