A Social event organised by Christine, the Club’s President. Christine was waiting for the Polyramblers at Maidenhead station and she took them for a walk through “The Gullet”, a local nature reserve, to her house for tea/coffee and biscuit on the patio. Later, the group walked to town for a pub lunch and then to the Maidenhead Heritage Centre (which used to be a pub). It has permanent exhibitions about the history of Maidenhead and the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) and a spitfire simulator. Four Polyramblers went for a walk along the Thames, up past Boulter’s Lock and back. Christine, Sunita and Carol went on the spitfire simulator. First, they were shown a short film about the Spitfire in action and the role women from 25 countries played in the second world war. Sunita went first in the spitfire. Getting into the cockpit was a bit tricky. After being shown the controls she took off and landed at Heathrow. It was fun to watch the others. They were Then given certificates to prove they had flown the simulator. The ticket for the flight is valid for the year so very good value for money.
