It was a bitingly cold and damp morning. Not the sort of morning to entice most people out walking but Polyramblers are made of sterner stuff and 11 people braved the elements for what was to be a superb walk. After meeting at Oakwood station, we set out along a footpath taking us into Trent Country Park. Our path took us into woodland with mist hanging in the trees and around the outskirts of former Middlesex University campus buildings now standing empty awaiting the approval of a planning application to refurbish the 18th century manor house, and rather surprisingly to build over two hundred new affordable homes. Walking along the main avenue we reached Cockfosters Road where we met one of a number of several friendly dogs we met on the walk, this one a beautiful bear like Japanese Akita. Saturday 28th January. Flitwick circular.
I hurried to the station and was met by 7 Polyramblers under a small shelter there. I was presented with a long parcel of cake and other unexpected goodies for tea time. Instead of leaving the station by the opening on the footbridge, we all proceeded throught the booking hall which was just as well as 2 extra polyramblers appeared on the other side. I thus rang through to the Green Man to confirm our numbers for lunch. Continue reading Saturday 28th January. Flitwick circular.
Saturday 26th November. Northolt to Alperton
Fifteen polyrambler, a guest and Teddy the poodle joined the walk, starting at Northolt village. Our walk took us to Northolt Church that was closed, the gravestones dating from around 1850 onwards. After a detour we eventually arrived at Northala Fields, a man-made country Style Park in London, where we were overtaken by the London strollers. We climbed the main peak (one of four) and enjoyed great views that included Windsor Castle and BT Tower whilst we enjoyed mince pies and stollen provided by Lucy and Peter. Newport (Essex) circular – Sunday 6th November 2016
Despite the dire weather forecast there were still some stalwart and courageous Polyramblers who turned out for this walk. Contrary to what we had been led to expect, we were rewarded with blue skies and bright sunshine although the wind was keen but that just encouraged us to keep up a good pace. Green shoots were bravely peeping up in the ploughed fields and we were treated to wide open skies and spacious views of the surounding rolling farmland. 30th July. Rowlands Castle and Stansted Forest
Five polyramblers met up at Waterloo station and boarded the 0945 Portsmouth train. The journey was overcast with patches of hazy sun. After Petersfield the sky became decidedly leaden and there was a cloudburst when we alighted at Rowlands Castle station – making haste to the sheltered part of the platform. Having set off out of the station approach, the sky started to clear and the rain almost stopped. It was about 11:30 and getting sunny. We took a stroll around the lovely village green noting various Golden/Diamond Jubilee memorials/planted Oaks, and the small church at one end which was locked. Continue reading 30th July.
