Spring Bank Holiday in South West Ireland

An impressive 32 made their way to Killarney where we stayed in several B&B’s. It’s a small town and, as the gateway to the ring of Kerry and the lakes, is  given over to  tourism. The main streets are very lively with dozens of bars and restaurants and throngs of visitors from all over the world. There’s music everywhere,  in bars and hotels and also from street performers. We particularly enjoyed a Scottish busker, complete with golden wig, who had a scurrilous song about Donald Trump to the tune of the Boxer.

As usual there were two levels of walks arranged over the three days. Sandra suggested that those doing the longer walks be called Hikers, and those doing the shorter ones, Strollers. Continue reading Spring Bank Holiday in South West Ireland

Friday 11 March – Sunday 13 March 2016: Lulworth YHA Weekend

This time, for its yearly hosteling weekend, the club had rented the  Youth Hostel in Lulworth, which forms part of the Dorset and East Devon World Heritage Site (WHS) – it is also England’s first WHS awarded by UNESCO in December 2001.  There were 17 of us in the 34 bed hostel so there was plenty of room for everybody.   Andrew and Sandy had to cancel but we were joined on the walks by Mike and Heather, her sister and brother in law – who had rented a cottage down the road for a week’s holiday – and by Pam for her last Youth Hostel weekend with us before she returns to Australia.  Continue reading Friday 11 March – Sunday 13 March 2016: Lulworth YHA Weekend

Snow-Walking Weekend in Bavaria

Just back from a very enjoyable long weekend in Bavaria based in the town of Fussen, less than two hours by train from Munich. The snow was late in coming this year but there was a significant fall just in time for our arrival and more during our stay, so there was plenty for us enjoy,  All twelve of us stayed in a very modern, well appointed guesthouse only a few minutes walk from the station.
