Peak District walking weekend – near Matlock

Contributions from Hilary, Sandy, Gillian, Pam and Sunita

Hilary writes:

After many years of enjoying walking breaks with the club. I decided that my turn had come to organise a walk weekend. There was just one obstacle to my good intention a complete inability to lead a walk as I have no sense of direction!

Luckily my sister came to the rescue and agreed to lead the longer walks including a walk with her walk club the Nomads. Many thanks to my sister Janet and the Nomads for all their hard work in leading the walks for so successfully.

We all stayed in Lodges in Darwin Forest Park which proved very popular venues for two parties to celebrate both Rochelle and Geoffrey’s birthdays. Continue reading Peak District walking weekend – near Matlock

AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND IN THE YORKSHIRE DALES

The Strollers’ report – By Sandy

On arrival in Settle there was the usual demand for a coffee stop from the subversive element but our leader enforced discipline and we made our way out of Settle into the beautiful, green Yorkshire Dales countryside. Spring Bank Holiday in South West Ireland

An impressive 32 made their way to Killarney where we stayed in several B&B’s. It’s a small town and, as the gateway to the ring of Kerry and the lakes, is  given over to  tourism. The main streets are very lively with dozens of bars and restaurants and throngs of visitors from all over the world. There’s music everywhere,  in bars and hotels and also from street performers. We particularly enjoyed a Scottish busker, complete with golden wig, who had a scurrilous song about Donald Trump to the tune of the Boxer.

As usual there were two levels of walks arranged over the three days. Sandra suggested that those doing the longer walks be called Hikers, and those doing the shorter ones, Strollers. Continue reading Spring Bank Holiday in South West Ireland

Friday 11 March – Sunday 13 March 2016: Lulworth YHA Weekend

This time, for its yearly hosteling weekend, the club had rented the  Youth Hostel in Lulworth, which forms part of the Dorset and East Devon World Heritage Site (WHS) – it is also England’s first WHS awarded by UNESCO in December 2001.  There were 17 of us in the 34 bed hostel so there was plenty of room for everybody.   Andrew and Sandy had to cancel but we were joined on the walks by Mike and Heather, her sister and brother in law – who had rented a cottage down the road for a week’s holiday – and by Pam for her last Youth Hostel weekend with us before she returns to Australia.  Continue reading Friday 11 March – Sunday 13 March 2016: Lulworth YHA Weekend
