Saturday 6th. Chessington circular

The promise of various wild life appeared to attract a goodly number of the nineteen participants to the Chessington walk last Saturday. However the peregrine falcon turned out to be a wooden sculpture, the beetle seen was not so rare and there was no sign of any badgers! However the sight of a dromedary camel and some antelope provided reasonable compensation, I think. We started with a short climb to Winey Hill for extensive views of south-west Continue reading Saturday 6th. May Bank Holiday weekend 2018: Tower Hill to Greenwich

On a very hot Mayday bank holiday weekend, 29 Polys gathered at Tower Hill for Dan’s 70th birthday walk to Blackheath. Pushing our way through the crowds of tourists, we walked round the Tower of London, and through St Katherine’s Dock and on to Wapping, Shadwell and Limehouse. By the time we reached Millwall Dock on the Isle of Dogs, it was a very hot and thirsty party of walkers that enjoyed a birthday drink courtesy of our leader – thanks, Dan!. The rest of the walk took us through Mudchute Park and City Farm Continue reading May Bank Holiday weekend 2018: Tower Hill to Greenwich

Saturday 20 April 2019: Greenford to Harrow- on-the Hill

Thirty five polyramblers joined this lovely outer London walk, Perivale woods being the main attraction, for the blue- bells. We made our way to the Grand Union Canal.  A cyclist said to us to look out for turtles, however, couple of polyramblers confirmed that we were looking at pink ear terrapins.

We arrived at Perivale Woods soon after. The blue bells were in full bloom and you could miss fragrant floral smell. We saw plenty of bird boxes and a hide. A great spot to listen to the birds, we heard wrens, blue tits, great tits, wood packer and chiffchaffe. Then we walked up to Horsenden Hill for great views. Here Jennifer shared chocolates with us. Then we made to Ballot Box Pub. The staff we superb and service was superb considering twenty of us wanted food and they had another group of thirty customers. Sunday 20th. Princes Risborough Circular

A healthy turnout of 22 walkers started out from Princes Risborough station on a circular walk that followed sections of the Ridgeway and Chilterns Way. It was one of those rare bright sunny frosty January mornings that showed off the beautiful Chilterns at their best. We had an early stop for lunch at a pub where most walkers opted for the Sunday roast which was very slow in being served but was good food and worth the wait. After a long lunch break the cold was really noticeable when we got outside. We resumed the walk and there was a beautifully restored old windmill located behind the pub.

12th January. Eltham to Abbey Wood

Seventeen members + one non-member gathered at Eltham station to undertake this 6 mile ramble across SE London’s open spaces. On walking out of the station approach we crossed under the railway and over the road to Well Hall Pleasaunce a local park, where I showed the party the spot where an 18th century house once stood where lived the author Edith Nesbit. Here she wrote “The Railway Children”. We then continued along Dunvegan Road until we reached Eltham Park with views across to Crystal Palace. Then we crossed Shepherdleas Wood then onto Oxleas Wood. This led out to Oxleas Meadows, a large sloping open space, where we  gradually climbed to the top end, and came across a cafe with more views over south east London. It was lunchtime.
