This walk in the Square Mile was a mixture of the old and the new with contemporary sculptures among modern office buildings such as the Gherkin and the Cheesegrater and older landmarks like St Helens Bishopsgate, St Botolphs and Leadenhall Market. We met outside Liverpool Street station on a chilly evening; 20 of us. I handed out an information sheet with explanations about each sculpture – to avoid questions I would have been unable to answer – Continue reading Wednesday 29 March 2017: Sculpture in the City Walk

Friday 24 to Sunday 26 March 2017: Portland YHA Weekend
The Polyramblers were back in Portland after our last trip in 2004; this time, we rented the Youth Hostel for the weekend. After a nice train journey, we took a bus to Fortuneswell and took possession of the Youth Hostel. We checked the facilities and chose our beds while waiting for the Tesco delivery. After tea and cake, we did a short walk and ended up at the Cove House Inn in Chiswell where Continue reading Friday 24 to Sunday 26 March 2017: Portland YHA Weekend
Sunday 19th March: Hadley Wood to Cockfosters and exploring Trent Country Park with the London Blind Ramblers (Linear)
Given the vicissitudes of finding a walk that didn’t involve a long stretch walking alongside the A1, starting at a station that wasn’t closed by engineering work, with a lunch-stop venue that wasn’t being repurposed as a block of swanky apartments, today’s walk turned out really well! I was more worried about there not being enough walkers or helpers but there were 31 of us in all! What a splendid turnout! Thanks to everyone Continue reading Sunday 19th March: Hadley Wood to Cockfosters and exploring Trent Country Park with the London Blind Ramblers (Linear)
13 to 16 January 2017: Snow-walking in Oberammergau (Bavaria)
Although we travelled on Friday 13 to Oberammergau, it was a very smooth journey by plane and train via Munich. After settling in our hotels we did an exploratory walk as night was falling and drank our first gluhwein/beer. Meal in the hotel and off to bed.
After a nice breakfast – and discovering that the hotel has 2 cats -we set off to walk the Altherrenweg, a trail with panoramic views which follows the Ammer valley. We saw a black squirrel and a hare. We Continue reading 13 to 16 January 2017: Snow-walking in Oberammergau (Bavaria)
Monday 2 January 2017: Bayford to Hertford North via Letty Green (linear walk)
A sunny but chilly day for the first walk of the year through woodland and fields in the beautiful county of Hertfordshire. 11 Polyramblers turned up to walk off the excess of Christmas . We walked along country roads before going through fields and woods (muddy but not too much), the outskirts of a quarry and more quiet lanes. We reached the Cowper Arms in Cole Green, where we were lucky to find a table in a bay window. Feeling invigorated after our Continue reading Monday 2 January 2017: Bayford to Hertford North via Letty Green (linear walk)
