15 Poly Ramblers met at Wadhurst Station and our path followed the undulating Sussex Border Path to The Old Vine pub in Cousley Wood, where we stopped for a welcome drink and comfort break. We then descended through the woods to reach Bewl Water Reservoir. The shore being open and unfenced unlike many other reservoirs made the perfect spot for a picnic with fine panoramic views across the water.
We continued along the path, skirting the shore and then through woods around several creeks and inlets before turning off and circling back towards Wadhurst.
The entry to Wadhurst was at the far end of the village and 3 people chose to plod on down the main road to the station, about 1.4 miles whilst the remaining 11 took the opportunity to stop for tea and cake in the Artful Grocers shop and café, before walking the 2 miles back to the station via the scenic route.
This area is described as one of the prettiest parts of the Weald – a place of hidden valleys, ancient woods, and quaint old farms which feel far away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It did not disappoint!
