By the time the complete party assembled at Chorleywood station, there were 18 of us. Although cloudy, it was a mild day and most importantly it stayed dry. The walk first of all took us through the Chorley wood where weeks of heavy rain had turned the footpath into thick slippery mud and this was how it was for most of the walk. In one place, there was a puddle that stretched the full width of the road, which we had to wade through. Our route took us through the pretty medieval village of Chenies and across the front of the ancient manor, seat of the family who gave the village its name. The path then climbed out of the valley of the river Chess to a view point where we could see the undulating hills of the Chilterns. Continue reading CHORLEYWOOD TO CHESHAM – 7 DECEMBER
Saturday 30 November 2019: Borough Green (Kent) (Circular)
Surprisingly, considering the weather on some walks this November and the forecast earlier in the week, we were blessed with a beautiful sunny day, once the fog had burned off. The ground was squelchy in parts but carpeted with brown and orange leaves. We kept up a good pace in order to get back to the station before nightfall. Sadly two of our star walkers were not able to join us for different reasons, so we were 13! Continue reading Saturday 30 November 2019: Borough Green (Kent) (Circular)
Saturday 23 November 2019: Hertford North (Circular)
A grey day with some drizzle for this walk in the Hertfordshire countryside and woodland. At one point, there were 20 walkers on this ramble but numbers varied during the day. As I was walking to Cuffley station, I saw Martin outside Costa. I went to buy my ticket and expected Martin to turn up but he did not board the train. Therefore I was a bit puzzled when I jointed 13 Polyramblers on the train. With three more waiting at Hertford North Station, we walked up to Thieves Lane and entered Panshanger Park which, in Continue reading Saturday 23 November 2019: Hertford North (Circular)
Saturday 16 November 2019: Effingham, Great Ridings, Little Bookham (Circular)
Fifteen walkers set out from Effingham Junction station on a cold, but initially sunny day. The group passed the 16th century Norwood Farm, a nice fungal fairy ring and a herd of alpacas before walking through Great Mornshill Wood. We then walked down a long bridleway before reaching the village of Little Bookham and along the main street to see a 15th century cottage, which looked as though it was about to fall down! SATURDAY 9th: HYDE HEATH AND CHESHAM (CIRCULAR)
Another walk full of autumn colours but this time we didn’t manage to escape the rain. Starting from Amersham in dry conditions and high cloud, 16 Poly Ramblers, led by Stuart, set off down tree lined residential streets and through woods. At one point we had to cross a recently ploughed field – very muddy. We reached the village of Hyde Heath where the village shop was open but not the pub. Continuing on woodland paths we eventually reached a fairly busy B road which took us into Chesham. By this time the forecast rain was Continue reading SATURDAY 9th: HYDE HEATH AND CHESHAM (CIRCULAR)
