NORFOLK COAST PATH WELLS NEXT THE SEA TO SHERINGHAM – JUNE 2024

This was the second stage of the Norfolk coast path.  We walked the first stage from Hunstanton to Wells next the Sea in  April 2023.  This stage took us eastwards from Wells to Sheringham. We based ourselves in the seaside town of Sheringham split between the Youth Hostel and an excellent B&B.  Following uneventful train journeys on a Friday afternoon in late June we convened at the friendly Crown pub on East Cliff for our pre-ordered dinner.  As it was a balmy mid summer evening we were able to watch the glorious sunset from the cliff top after our meal.

The next morning we gathered for the bus to Wells next the Sea, with some anxiety as to whether we would all fit on it as there were 28 of us.  We did, but only just, and some of us had to stand most of the way.  On arriving at the seaside harbour town of Wells there were many cafes and delis to tempt us but we ignored them and headed east alongside the salt marshes.  We decided against a diversion to the village of Stiffkey and continued to the National Trust café at Marston Quay where we stopped for lunch.  The weather was warm so another stop at Blakeney for icecreams and drinks was required.  No seals unfortunately.  The last section took us to Cley Next The Sea which is not next to the sea at all but was once a port in medieval times. There we met Lorna and Hilary who had been resting their respective knee and ankle by visiting Open Gardens.  A couple of people stayed on to visit Cley windmill and the rest of us piled on the bus back to Sheringham.

On Sunday morning we managed to get seats on the bus.   Alighting at Cley we passed the windmill and headed to the coast.   We were then faced with nearly 4 miles of hard walking on shingle.  Quite daunting but we decided to stop every 30 minutes to rest and let everyone catch up.   This worked well and eventually we were off the shingle and reached the turning for the village of Weybourne.  Some of us headed into the village for the pub or café and others picnicked on the benches behind the beach.  By this time we were only 3 miles or so from Sheringham and it was getting chilly so we set off on the lovely cliff top walk in rather strung out fashion but managed to arrive in plenty of time for our train back to Norwich and London (with delays this time).

Looking forward to the next leg next summer.
