On a bright Saturday morning, with the promise of a coffee and toilet stop after 15 minutes, twelve Polyramblers set off from the station heading for Osterley Park. Shortly after entering the park the grand facade of the sixteenth century Osterley Park House came into view. Sadly, both the house and its tearoom were closed for filming of ‘The Crown’ but we were able to use the toilets.
Sixteen walkers turned out on the first day of autumn on a beautiful sunny day for a walk from Great Missenden. We headed west along field edges and through woodland. It was good to see the landscape so green after the prolonged dry spell but the absence of mud was also very welcome. We picked hazelnuts and the last of the blackberries and watched the red kites overhead. The forecast was for a cloudy day but, in the end, we had sunshine for most of the day. After a pleasant journey on HS1, 15 Polyramblers alighted in Margate. We walked along or on top of low chalk cliffs passing Fulsam Rock, Walpole Rocks and Long Nose Spit and nice beaches with beautiful sand in Palm Bay, Botany Bay, Kingsgate Bay and its Castle and Joss Bay. We continued to Broadstairs – Charles Dickens’ favourite holiday spot – which was quite crowded. We saw his house and ate in his pub. Some of us also had an ice cream at Morelli’s ice cream parlour. While 6 Polyramblers decided to explore Broadstairs’ delights, 9 of us continued to Ramsgate. Danny was quite excited to arrive in Ramsgate to see the Royal Victoria Pavilion, the largest Wetherspoons pub in the world! After welcoming a newcomer Bev, we left Barnes station at about 11:00 for a gentle walk along the Thames to Richmond arriving at about 13:30, where we stopped for a drink and something to eat. The weather was sunny in the morning with many bicycle riders and marathon runners out. At Richmond some people returned home whilst the remainder continued to Teddington via Buccleuch Gardens and Petersham Meadows along the river.

After a long but smooth journey, 8 Polyramblers arrived in West Mersea to be met by Gini who was spending the weekend with a friend who lives on Mersea. It was sunny but not too hot and the tide was coming in when we started our walk clockwise out of the small town. We passed lovely houses and were soon on the sea wall.
