On the Friday, travelling by car, train and bus, 27 Polyramblers made their way to Beer in Devon. 21 to stay in the youth hostel which the club had hired for the weekend and 6 in the Dolphin Hotel. The hostel is a beautiful stone country house located just outside the fishing village of Beer. Standing in its own grounds, it retains many original features, including stripped timber floors and leaded windows.
After a delayed flight, 2 trains and 2 buses, 8 Polyramblers finally arrived in Biberwier for a snow-walking weekend. And snow, there was – loads. After settling in gasthaus Panorama, we ate a lovely dinner in a nearby restaurant, Hotel Restaurant Alpina, which became our favourite watering hole. Some of us enjoyed their first apfelstrudel and others a few schnapps. Continue reading Friday 11 to Monday 14 January 2019: Snow-walking in Tyrol→
On a grey Sunday before Christmas, 13 Polyramblers met at Victoria tube station for a walk passing four cathedrals and attending a carol service at a fifth. The first was Westminster Cathedral, or the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the largest Catholic church building in England and Wales and the seat of the Archbishop of Westminster. Following on from the success of our previous weekend in Darwin Forest we booked lodges at Sandybrook Park in Ashbourne. On the Friday afternoon we settled into our lodges and prioritised party plans for the weekend to celebrate birthdays.
Our orientation walk was via the Tissington trail to Ashbourne. We arrived at St Oswald’s church dating back to 1240 and home to many artefacts about local history. We were lucky enough to be shown around by the vicar who was happy to expand on the churches’ historical significance.
Although it was rather wet, we had a pleasant short walk along the Thames from Hampton Wick, saw all the boats and had a nice lunch at ‘Tide End Cottage’ next to the Anglers Pub. Solvig joined us for lunch, after which we continued on towards Richmond. It was a shame about the rail strike but despite all the difficulties we were able to enjoy each others company and get some much needed weekend exercise.
