On a nice summer’s evening, 16 Polyramblers went to explore Bermondsey, the site of Bermondsey Abbey founded in the 8th century and, later, the centre of the leather trade and tanneries. We started with Bermondsey Street with its mixture of old and new buildings. Mary pointed out number 78 where her mother used to work. We continued to St Mary Magdalen church where there is a memorial to Susanna Wood. The carving is eroded but the wording Continue reading Thursday 21 July: A Bermondsey evening walk

Saturday 9 July: Great Missenden Circular Walk
Fourteen hikers turned out for our walk in Great Missenden. We followed the South Bucks Way and Chiltern Trails. We passed some pretty villages including Little and Great Hampden, Bryant Bottom and Prestwood. Our walk took us through fields, woodland and some very overgrown paths. Lucy and I both had secateurs, however, Lucy did a better job of clearing the path. I hope everyone Continue reading Saturday 9 July: Great Missenden Circular Walk
Saturday 25 June: Milford to Godalming
This was nearly the perfect walk – beautiful countryside, three refreshment stops &, apart from an hour after lunch, lovely weather. After an hour we stopped for a drink at the Merry Harriers at Hambledon, then we continued through pleasantly undulating woodland to the White Horse at Hascombe where there was a classic village green with large pond for the sandwich-eaters & a wonderfully decorated church. After the lunch stop we were a little Continue reading Saturday 25 June: Milford to Godalming
Saturday 18 June: Icknield Way Stage 4 – Baldock to Royston (Herts)
Thirteen walkers turned out for stage four of the Icknield Way on Saturday. I decided to skip a couple of miles of road walking from Letchworth and start at Baldock, so cutting the distance from 14 miles to a more manageable 12. The weather was coolish so good for walking, though a little chilly for sitting around.
We started down Baldock’s impressive high street, passing an enormous Tesco with an unusual Art Deco façade. We headed north east on a gently undulating route through poppy fields, soon Continue reading Saturday 18 June: Icknield Way Stage 4 – Baldock to Royston (Herts)
Sunday 5 June: Capital Ring Sections 11 and 12 with the London Blind Ramblers
What a lovely day for a walk! After all that wintry weather we’d had in the previous week it was a joy to be out in the sunshine. All together we were 24 blind and sighted walkers and Paris, a black labrador. Beforehand I was worried that the parks would be heaving with people but on the morning walk the parks, green spaces and woods as we wended our way along our route were not that busy apart from occasional tennis players, quite a few dogs and their owners and chatting pushchair couples. Continue reading Sunday 5 June: Capital Ring Sections 11 and 12 with the London Blind Ramblers
